One of the earliest symptoms of someone being infested with itch mites is the scabies rash. The rash occurs when an allergic reaction takes place, caused by toxins emitted by the mites in various secretions, poo and even the eggs. It is this which causes the red, inflamed, extremely itchy and unpleasant bumps or blisters to appear on the skin.
Unfortunately, the scabies rash can appear similar to those associated with other skin conditions and can on occasion bemisdiagnosed by doctors as chicken pox, dermatitis or eczema to name but a few. This can mean that proper treatment is not given immediately which can lead to complications such as bacterial infections becoming a problem before the correct medication is received.
In the majority of cases the scabies rash will show itself on areas of skin where the mites can easily hide out for example, feet, hands, knees, armpits, chest, wrists, waist, nipples, bottom and genitals. Occasionally the scabies rash can be found on the scalp but this is more common in young children or in someone who has the most aggressive form of scabies – crusted scabies in which case the rash looks more like warts.
For anyone who has suffered an infestation of scabies you will know that the scabies rash is the first symptom you are likely to notice and it is also the last symptom to disappear even after treatment.
Over the counter hydro cortisone creams and oral antihistamines will give some relief as will analgesic creams however, they will not help in the healing process. Natural remedies include bathing in warm water containing oatmeal or applying tea tree oil or neem oil directly to affected areas.
